You still wonder how others see you
You’ve benefited from some individual therapy, gained insight into your problems, feel less stressed and overwhelmed than before.
You’ve even gone on to make some changes in your life as a result, but you still can’t help but wonder how others see you.
It’s hard to speak up
Some social situations still intimidate you. You worry how you’ll be perceived and if others will see the person you’ve become.
You’re not sure where to begin in your encounters with others at work or in social situations.
Other people make it look so easy, and it’s hard to jump in. Sometimes in groups, you feel very small, like no one is interested.
I stood in the background until I learned to speak up in group
I used to hate groups! I couldn’t stand group projects in school and didn’t know what to do with myself in social and professional settings where I didn’t know a bunch of people already.
I had already been in individual therapy and had done well, changed career goals, gone back to school, and felt more comfortable in my skin – but still didn’t know what to do with myself in social situations. Then my therapist asked if I wanted to join a group.
“Want to?” No, of course not, but I knew it was the next step in my personal growth.
I learned that others felt the same way
My therapists were great and made me feel like they cared and understood me.
But I wasn’t sure anyone else would. After all, they were paid to listen and understand.
The members of my group were all ages and different from me in many ways, but they shared some of the same fears of being judged by others.
We validated each other and worked through our interpersonal issues
The group therapist was able to help us work through behaviors we had learned in our families, helped us understand how to be curious about one another, and to trust the process of working together.
Group therapy is an experience I’ll never forget, and I love to see others benefit from the power of a well-facilitated group.
The laboratory of life…
Group dynamics provide clients with the opportunity to work through issues related to relationships, family dynamics.
It can be an invaluable tool for persons who have worked through preliminary issues related to trauma and addictive behaviors.
In addition, the group experience can be extremely powerful in helping people work through internalized racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression.
